For personalised guidance, we encourage you to book a discussion with one of our nurses.

Eligibility

How do I know if I'm eligible? Eligibility for accessing medicinal cannabis is determined by a registered Australian healthcare professional based on individual health circumstances. This is a regulated process that considers various factors.

Where do I start or what are the first steps?   The first step is to book a discussion with one of our nurses. They can guide you through the initial considerations and potential pathways available, helping you understand the next steps in your individual circumstances.

Pathways

Who can prescribe? In Australia, medicinal cannabis can be prescribed by any medical practitioner registered in Australia.

Do I need an authorised prescriber (AP)? Medical practitioners can prescribe medicinal cannabis through various regulatory pathways, including the Special Access Scheme (SAS) or by becoming an Authorised Prescriber. Your doctor will determine the appropriate pathway for your individual case.

What medical conditions? A medical practitioner will assess your individual health needs to determine if medicinal cannabis is a suitable option for you. This assessment considers your unique circumstances and medical history.

Access

Are these products subsidised by the PBS? Currently, most medicinal cannabis products available in Australia are not subsidised by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Costs are typically out-of-pocket for the patient.

Where can I fill my script? If a prescription is deemed appropriate for you, it can be filled at pharmacies that stock or can order medicinal cannabis products. Your prescribing healthcare professional will provide guidance on this.

Is it legal to travel with my medication? Travelling domestically within Australia with legally prescribed medicinal cannabis is generally permissible, provided you carry it with your valid prescription and keep it in its original pharmacy-labelled packaging. However, rules and requirements can vary between states and territories, and it is always advisable to carry proof of your prescription and photo identification that matches. For international travel, specific legal requirements and restrictions vary significantly by destination, and it is crucial to check the regulations of both your departure and destination countries, as well as any transit points, well in advance.
